The Mayville Lady Cardinals volleyball team got the better of the Horicon Marshladies last Thursday, Sept. 12 at Mayville High School, winning three sets in four games to take the best-of-five regional rivalry match. Mayville (4-2, 1-0) made quick work of the first set, defeating Horicon (3-3, 0-2) 25-14.

The Marshladies took control of set two, needing an extra point to hold off Mayville, winning 2624.

It was all Cardinals in the next two sets, however, as Mayville rallied from the second set loss to win the next two sets each by a score of 2517.

Even though Mayville was able to dominate in sets two, three and four, head coach Sarah Persha said she was most proud of her team during the second set loss.

“We made a late eight-point run to tie it up,” said Persha about that second set. “They did prove to themselves that they can come back from a weak start to a set,” adding that the late rally in set two brought momentum into sets three and four.

Maggie Vander Schaaf had seven aces in the match. She also added eight kills.

Alaina Wagner led the Lady Cards with 13 kills. She also logged nine digs.

Megan Schellpfeffer finished the night with a team-leading 13 digs.

Delaney Vetter registered two blocks, a team-lead for Mayville, in addition to her five kills.

Chloe Welak and Melanie Giese rounded out the counting stats with 19 and nine assists (respectively).

Up next for the Lady Cards is a Parent’s Night home match against St. Mary’s Springs. In order to be successful, Persha says her squad will need to work on reducing errors.

“We need to improve on reducing errors, or at least multiple errors back-to-back,” said Persha. “The girls need to continue to feed off the positive home court advantage, be aggressive with our blocking and smart with our attacks.”

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Horicon played Lourdes Academy at home on Tuesday, Sept. 17 after print time. Due up, the Marshladies travel to Oakfield this Thursday for a 7 p.m. match, and then return home to host Dodgeland on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Results from the matches on the 17th and 19th will be in next week’s Pionier.
