Theodore “Ted, Tater” Kahlow, Fox Lake formerly of Mayville, 86, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on June 27, 2019.

He was born on October 12, 1932, to Arthur and Magdalene “Helen” (Gruenes) Kahlow in Mayville.

He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and Mayville High School where he graduated in 1951. He enlisted in the Air Force and served four years, earning the rank of Airman First Class.

He was a communication radio operator during the Korean War intercepting Russian and Chinese Morse code.

In his younger years, Ted enjoyed tending bar at his dad’s bar, Art and Martin’s in Mayville and Riverview Inn in Kekoskee. He was a supervisor in shipping/ receiving/assembly at Mayville Metal and after 31 years, retired in 1991.

He was a member of the Mayville American Legion Post 69 for 48 years. He served on the Mayville Park Board and was a Babe Ruth Coach. He loved sports and could be seen or heard at the Mayville football and basketball games. Ted was a diehard Bear and Cub fan and enjoyed watching the Cubs finally win the World Series after a 100-year drought.

In 1987, Ted and Pat moved to Fox Lake where he made many new friends and enjoyed giving his grandchildren rides on the pontoon. Ted enjoyed spending time with his family and good friends, volunteering for the American Legion brat frys, bowling, golfing, deer hunting Up North, fishing on Fox Lake, gardening and sharing produce with others. He loved all animals (God’s little creatures) and loved feeding the birds and the squirrels.

After retiring, he spent many years exercising at the Sports and Fitness Center at Beaver Dam Hospital and he volunteered as a driver for Dodge County transportation.

He married Patricia “Pat” Goetsch on January 31, 1959, and together they raised six wonderful children and 14 grandchildren. Michael (Diane Odeen) River Falls, and their children, Andrea and Emily Kahlow; Christine Kahlow of La Crosse and her children, Evan Kahlow and Anna Kivi; Tom Kahlow of Shawano, and his children, Laura (Logan) Bringmann, Stephen (Talia) Kahlow, and Joseph Kahlow; Sandy (Tom) Scola of Lodi, and their children, Alexandra and Dominic Scola; John (Beth) Kahlow of Carmel, Indiana and their children, Brett, Jenna and Bridget Kahlow; and Daniel (Vicki) Kahlow of Fond du Lac, and their children, Elizabeth Kahlow andAlex B. He is further survived by brothers David (Terri) Sorgent and Bob (Sue) Sorgent, sister, Diana “Dolly” Lunde, Aunt Gertie Kahlow, sister-in-law, Gerry Kahlow, and brothers-in-law, Elmer, Albert, Robert, Richard Goestch, sister, Wilma (David) Lee, and cousins and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; step-mother, Myrtle; step-father, Tom Manchester; brother, Edgar “Zark” Kahlow; brother, Jim and sisterin- law, Judy Manchester; sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Frieda and Carolyn Goetsch; brotherin- law, Marce Thoma.

A memorial gathering was held on Tuesday, July 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam.

A Celebration of Life began at 1 p.m. with Deacon Willis Heideman officiating. Military Honors were conducted by the Mayville American Legion Post #69 will follow.
